WAMC Raises Funds Every Year to Provide Scholarships for Deserving Young Musicians

Announcing our two new Scholarship Winners for 2025!

Kyra Brown. Our first Scholarship Winner is Kyra Brown, a cello student of Mary Costanza, studying at the Jacob’s School of Music at Indiana University with Peter Stumpf. Starting her musical journey with piano at age 5 and beginning her cello journey at age 7, Kyra has performed in Alabama and Connecticut through youth orchestra programs, including Decatur Youth Symphony and Greater Connecticut Youth Orchestra.

Through these programs, Kyra has participated in chamber ensembles such as chamber orchestras and string quartets, and has performed with these groups for the Rotary International Club and the Pequot Library in Southport. She regularly accompanies choirs at New Milford High School, and has performed in the pit orchestra of her high school’s musicals for 4 years.

She made her solo debut with an orchestra in 2025, playing the first movement of the Dvorak Cello Concerto with the Greater Connecticut Youth Orchestra.

Our second Scholarship Winner is Kevin McGuire from Derby, who will be attending Oberlin Conservatory majoring in piano performance. We will be posting his photo soon.

The 2024 Wednesday Afternoon Music Club Scholarship has been awarded to Phoebe Skye Merrill

WAMC has a new scholarship winner, Phoebe Merrill of Easton. She has been awarded a four year scholarship worth $2,000 and will be attending Belmont University in Nashville TN. We look forward to great things from her as she continues her musical endeavors.

Phoebe Skye Merrill is a singer songwriter who recently graduated from Joel Barlow High School, whose thoughtful lyrics reflect the stories of her own life…and imagined ones.

This gifted and multi-talented young woman sings, plays guitar, and writes music that has its heart in the traditions of Americana music. Think: wanderlust, romanticism, and a soulful introspection. She will be continuing her music career at Belmont University in Nashville, TN.
